چکیده

We have argued that the capture-zone distribution (CZD) in submonolayer growth can be well described by the generalized Wigner distribution (GWD) PðsÞ 1⁄4 asβ expð bsÞ, where s is the CZ area divided by its average value. This approach offers arguably the most robust (least sensitive to mass transport) method to find the critical nucleus size i, since β iþ2. Various analytical and numerical investigations, which we discuss, show that the simple GWD expression is inadequate in the tails of the distribution, it does account well for the central regime 0:5oso2, where the data is sufficiently large to be reliably accessible experimentally. We summarize and catalog the many experiments in which this method has been applied. & 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Capture-zone areas in submonolayer nucleation: effects of dimensionality and short-range interactions.

Simulation results for the asymptotic scaled capture-zone distribution (CZD) for the case of irreversible nucleation and growth of point islands are presented for substrate dimension d=1 , 2, 3, and 4 and compared with a recent conjecture based on the Wigner distribution. Poor agreement is found between the predicted Wigner distributions and the asymptotic CZD in the limit of infinite DF (corre...

Capture zone area distributions for nucleation and growth of islands during submonolayer deposition.

A fundamental evolution equation is developed to describe the distribution of areas of capture zones (CZs) associated with islands formed by homogeneous nucleation and growth during submonolayer deposition on perfect flat surfaces. This equation involves various quantities which characterize subtle spatial aspects of the nucleation process. These quantities in turn depend on the complex stochas...

Upper critical dimension for irreversible cluster nucleation and growth in the point-island regime.

We compare the results of kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) simulations of a point-island model of irreversible nucleation and growth in four dimensions (4D) with the corresponding mean-field (MF) rate-equation predictions for the monomer density, island density, island-size distribution (ISD), capture-number distribution (CND), and capture-zone distribution (CZD), in order to determine the critical di...

The effect of two-zone concentric bifocal spectacle lenses on refractive error development and eye growth in young chicks.

PURPOSE To characterize the effects on refractive error development and eye growth in young chicks of two-zone concentric lens designs, which differentially affect the defocus experiences of central and peripheral retinal regions. METHODS Monocular defocusing lenses were worn for 5 days from 17 days of age. Four two-zone concentric lens designs (overall optical zone diameter, 10 mm) combining...

Rate-equation approach to island size distributions and capture numbers in submonolayer irreversible growth

We present a quantitative rate-equation approach to irreversible submonolayer growth on a two-dimensional substrate. Our method explicitly takes into account the existence of a denuded ~‘‘capture’’! zone around every island and the correlations between the size of an island and the corresponding average capture zone. The evolution of the capture-zone distributions is described by a set of Voron...
